To mark a quarter century of friendship and cooperation, Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner visited the German capital’s partner city, Windhoek, from 15 to 18 October 2025. The visit, held under the theme “Remembering together. Experiencing together. Creating change together,” celebrated 25 years of partnership between the two cities.

Mayor Wegner was accompanied by a delegation of cultural and business representatives, highlighting the broad and dynamic collaboration between Berlin and Windhoek. Ahead of the visit, he emphasized the importance of strengthening the relationship, saying:

“For 25 years, Berlin and Windhoek have cultivated an active city partnership. We want to further strengthen and intensify this relationship. The two cities are linked by joint projects in culture, education, business, research, sports, and support for democracy – and also by our historical responsibility in light of Germany’s colonial past. We want to expand the cooperation between Berlin and Windhoek and foster good relationships, especially among young people on both continents.”

One of the highlights of the trip took place on 17 October 2025, when Mayor Wegner visited the Riverheights Football Academy in Windhoek. During his visit, he officially opened the academy’s newly built kitchen, a milestone for the community initiative. The mayor interacted warmly with the young athletes, playing football, touring the library, and presenting a football jersey to the academy’s founder, Nixon Marcus.

The visit was marked by a spirit of unity and optimism, reflecting both cities’ shared commitment to cooperation, cultural exchange, and youth empowerment. For Berlin and Windhoek, the milestone offered not only a moment of reflection but also a renewed promise to keep building bridges for the next 25 years and beyond.
